Mercari Pros & Cons
- Faster, simpler listing process than eBay, with a streamlined mobile app that lowers the barrier for casual sellers to actually list items
- No listing fees at all — sellers only pay a percentage fee on completed sales, removing the risk of paying to list an item that never sells
- Mobile-first design makes quick listing (snap a photo, write a brief description, set a price) genuinely fast compared to more involved desktop listing workflows
- Covers a wide range of general categories, similar in breadth to eBay, supporting most casual resale needs in one app
- Straightforward, predictable fee structure without the more complex fee tiers some other marketplaces use
- Smaller overall buyer base than eBay, particularly for less common, niche, or specialty items where eBay's larger audience matters more
- Less suited to auction-style selling, which eBay still supports and which can sometimes maximize sale price for collectible or competitively desired items
- 10% selling fee is a meaningful cut of sale proceeds, worth factoring into pricing decisions for sellers
- Less developed seller tools and analytics than more established, feature-rich marketplace platforms
Poshmark Pros & Cons
- Social-feed format helps sellers build a following and develop repeat buyer relationships, unlike purely transactional general marketplaces
- Strong existing buyer base specifically shopping for fashion and clothing, creating real demand density within that focused category
- Free to list, with no upfront cost or risk before an item actually sells
- Live 'Posh Parties' and social discovery features create engagement and visibility beyond passive search-based browsing
- Fashion-specific focus means buyers browsing Poshmark are already in a clothing-shopping mindset, improving conversion likelihood
- 20% fee on sales of $15 or more is meaningfully higher than many general marketplaces' fee structures, a real consideration for sellers' margins
- Limited entirely to fashion and accessories — not suited at all to selling electronics, furniture, or other general goods categories
- Building a meaningful social following and repeat buyer base takes sustained effort, similar to other social-commerce platforms
- Smaller overall platform scope than general marketplaces means it's only relevant for sellers specifically in the fashion category
